How It Works

Lithium-ion batteries are a fundamental feature in countless devices and appliances, and are known for their high energy density, longevity, ability to be recharged many times, overall safety, and sustainability. However, with the enormous number of lithium-ion batteries out there in the world today, the fire risk associated with these kinds of batteries is arguably growing.

A lithium-ion battery fire can start without notice or warning. Typical causes include damage to the battery, short-circuiting, overcharging, or overheating. Often, when these fires start, they are fierce, abrupt, and extremely hard to extinguish with traditional extinguishing agents. Therefore, the risk of lithium-ion battery fires is something that needs to be considered.

So, how do our extinguishers work?

  1. The multipurpose formula found in our extinguishers is packed with encapsulator agent (EA) molecules, which consist of a hydrophilic polar head (which loves water and dissolves in water) and a hydrophobic non-polar tail (which fears water and will do anything to get away from water).
  2. Once these EA molecules enter the water, they instantly and automatically orient with the non-polar tails inward and the polar heads outward, forming millions of spherical micelles.
  1. When these micelles exit the nozzle as the extinguisher is activated, they form F-500 EA droplets. As each droplet is formed, the micelles nearest to the surface of the droplet automatically break apart. The F-500 EA molecule non-polar tails stick out of the droplet, pulling the polar heads to the surface.
  1. This forms a protective F-500 EA skin on each droplet. Instead of making bubbles, this changes the chemical makeup of the water droplet, and how it is able to cool and extinguish fire.
  1. The non-polar tails on the surface of the EA droplet rapidly absorb heat, and drive it inside to where the micelles and water are. Through this process, the heat is the slowly absorbed into the water that surrounds each micelle. This stops it from creating steam.
  2. The F-500 EA droplets invade the lithium-ion battery fire to ensure the fire is put out

The F-500 EA droplets encapsulate the flammable electrolytes within the lithium-ion battery, rendering them non-flammable. This prevents reignition, which is common in lithium-ion battery fires.

Each F-500 EA water droplet is able to absorb heat up to 6-10 times more efficiently than regular water, whilst not producing steam. This means that our extinguishers are second to none when it comes to their ability to absorb heat, rapidly cool fires, and stop the fire from spreading. Our extinguishers are also multipurpose (effective on class A, B, and F fires), non-corrosive, biodegradable, and 100% fluorine free. They also double as a control agent for combustible or flammable vapour and liquid spills, and work to mitigate byproducts or poisonous gasses.
